Eliminate manual data entry and leverage dynamic data by accessing smart values on submitted forms on issues. Not only can you now retrieve form data in Jira Service Management, but can also use these values to power automations and fuel reporting.

Access any submitted forms on an issue by using forms and the automation lists smart values to format the value of forms in a list when setting up a rule. Plus access any specific smart values of form fields and combine, reformat, and manipulate values to suit your specific needs.

Up to now, we have been linking Form fields to Jira fields if we needed them for reporting or automation. I checked the lists smart value link they used and they don't mention "forms" on the page anywhere. So, my guess is you are expected to already understand how to apply list smart value formatting to form fields in the context of automations... 

Is there a post or feature request where this specific update might have more context and details?

they should really do a better job in linking the information. I've found this docs page which describes some details how to access forms in smart values.
