Just a heads up: On March 24, 2025, starting at 4:30pm CDT / 19:30 UTC, the site will be undergoing scheduled maintenance for a few hours. During this time, the site might be unavailable for a short while. Thanks for your patience.
×Suddenly, I am getting an error when I try to change the status of tickets to In Progress: "Please enter Original Estimate."
Time tracking has not been required on this project for years and suddenly, out of nowhere, it is. So... I went to field configuration for Time tracking and it was required but hidden. I made it optional and removed it from all screens. Same error.
Then I went to settings > Issue Features > Time Tracking to disable it completely per these instructions: https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver073/configuring-time-tracking-861253946.html?_ga=2.203584528.1073167183.1580945979-2121314446.1548960953 but there is no "Deactivate" button!
I don't want time tracking at all. Don't need it and it has been disabled/hidden on this project for years. Don't know what changed to suddenly make this a problem but I need to disable it. What do it do???
Seems like this started for many of us that use Jira CLOUD on Tuesday 2/4/2020. I think Jira must have made a system change that impacted us. We had to find and disable the time tracking requirement too.
Odd thing is I have not found much about this online so it was nice to see that it happened to someone else and not just our instance.
You were able to disable it? I have not found a way to do that. Can you share with me how you did it?

One of the other Jira Admins made the change but they tell me this is what had to change.
Go to settings, then under "fields" find "Field Configurations", (you may need to pick the correct configuration, example: Default Field Configuration) then find "Time Tracking" and use the action buttons/links to pick "optional" to make it not-required. You can also hide the field from the same page. Hope that helps.

Thanks for that Scott but that was the first thing I tried and it's still giving me the "Please enter Original Estimate" error when I try to move a ticket into the In Progress status.
I've tried every combination of making the field optional and hidden. Still get the error.

Perhaps look at the workflow for the project. Maybe there is a transition to in-progress that is requiring that field to be populated. Other than that, I don't know you could open a ticket with Atlassian for support. let me know what it ends up being.
