Cloud automation - mention specific user in comment

Brendan Sheppard October 26, 2023

Hi all

In my Cloud instance, I am trying to @mention a specific user in an automation action using the smart value instructions outlined here.

So I went to my profile as instructed and took the last part of the URL as below

jira id.png

to use in the format [~accountId:7120...a8f] which resulted in this:

jira @user.png

I note that in my URL there is a % rather than a : as per the Atlassian instructions.  Out of interest I replaced this but that didn't work.

Does anybody have any idea what I'm doing wrong, please?

I managed to do this easily in Server but have just moved over to Cloud and trying to re-create all my existing automations.

Thanks heaps, Brendan

Hi @Brendan Sheppard

Those Atlassian-provided instructions will lead to an encoded value for the browser URL, and the rule will not take that.

Instead please try this:

  • using an issue search, such as with View All Issues
  • use this JQL: assignee = type-in-the-user-name
  • when you enter that, the value will be replaced with the account id value
  • use that in your rule's mention

Kind regards,
Bill

Thanks so much Bill, that worked.

Interestingly, the URL format was only a few digits off the new/correct value. If I replaced %3A with a colon it would have worked.  I wonder if that's all or just for me... time will tell.

Not sure why they make finding the account id so obscure!

Cheers Bill
