Creating an epic directly in new super level

Ruben Dewyngaert September 8, 2020

Hi,

We created a new issue type (Enhancement) on top of epics, using advanced roadmaps / plans in a premium subscription.

We would like to create new epics inside the detail screen of these enhancement. Unfortunately when we add a child, a new sub-task directly under this enhancement is created instead of an epic.

Can we change this behaviour?

Hi @Ruben Dewyngaert

The "create child" option in an issue screen is for sub-tasks only.

For creating/linking Epics to your new higher level - Enhancement - you'll need to:

  • Parent Link: Ensure the field "Parent Link" is available on the Epic's issue screen - this is the field which creates the parent/child relationship between the two issue types
    • Go to Jira Settings > Issues > Screens, and add the new field to the appropriate screen
  • Create Epic: Create the Epic via the normal create process - then enter its parent into the "Parent Link" field.

Thank you for the quick response.

We did set up the Parent Link too indeed, this seems to be working.
It will be quite confusing for new people since we'll be creating sub-tasks directly as child for the highest level types.

Maybe it is possible to turn the sub task creating off at least? So we won't be able to create sub-tasks under our new super level?

Hi @Ruben Dewyngaert

Natively, it's only possible to manage sub-tasks at a global or project level, rather than per issue type.

You can:

  • Global: Disable sub-tasks for all projects. Go to Jira Settings > Issues > Sub-Tasks, and click the "Disable" hyperlink.
  • Project: Disable sub-task creation in one project (for all issue types).
    • Go to Jira Settings > Issues > Issue Type Schemes. Locate your project's scheme, and remove the sub-task issue type(s)
    • You will need to have zero issues in all "sub-task" types prior to making this modification.

There is a feature request for this functionality - see JRACLOUD-7990. However as this request is 15 years old, it is probably not being considered at this time!

You could also look whether there is an app on the Marketplace which can assist with this if needed!

Okay, thank you.

We need the sub-tasks for our team though.

We can make it work, it just does not look and feel as clean as we'd like.

Thank you for your assistance!
