I have a project in JIRA running in sprints for long. There's a need to have another fixed-scope work stream within the same project, to be done by another independent team. The Idea is to separate this new work from the mainstream through components and run this project using KanBan.
Question
Since Kanban maps statuses with columns, there's a need to define a different workflow for this Kanban project. How can this be achieved? On a side note, I could have used existing statuses (InProgress, Done, Resolved, Open) as-is, but I want to follow an approach where each status has a pair of Ongoing and Done states. Hence, the need for a separate workflow.
Hello,
Unfortunately, I do not understand why you need pair statuses. You can map same statuses in your boards but give the columns different names, if you need to change names.
I am afraid I don't understand how the second part of your question is of any use. A board is a view of a set of issues. Those issues follow a workflow which should be mapping the process you are using to handle them. It makes no sense to use different workflows for the same issues in the same process (and hence there's no way to do it)
The first part of your question is simple though - yes you can have different boards looking at the same project, and you can indeed have one (or many) Scrum boards using it at the same time as one (or many) other Kanban board(s) including the issues.
I am guessing a bit here, but I think what you might be describing is having a single project with two (or more) workflows with several boards that only look at issues using one workflow each. This is entirely possible, but you will need to define the workflows by issue type, not component. You will then be able to have boards with filters like "project = X and issuetype = Y" and "project = X and issuetype = Z" to work separately.
