Currently we create a project and assign it a bit bucket. Can we "after the fact" link a bit bucket to a ticket, task, sub task and/or bug?
You can learn more about the integration here, but besides being able to see you Bitbucket repositories under Code, you can on each issue see branches, commits, and pull requests that mention that specific issue. You can transition issues in the workflow using smart commits or automation.
Ok this may have answered our question. However, if this is not possible or the answer we were looking for, can we create a custom field onto the task, sub task, or bug to be able to place a bitbucket url?

The issue will be linked to your repository if you are mentioning the issue key (JRA-123) as part of your commit, in the branch name or as part the description in a pull request. So you do not have to use a custom field to add a link to the repository in Bitbucket.

@Melanie Frasier hi there! Glad to see you've solved your issue. In case you want to switch the approach for the next project, I'd like to propose taking a look at ZigiOps. It can connect the systems bi-directionally in no time. It's customizable so you can tailor it to fit various use cases - link bit bucket to jira's tickets, tasks, sub-task, bugs and other. Feel free to explore it and if you want to know how it actually works, you can book a demo.
Best Regards, Diana (ZigiWave team)
