Jira cloud backup questions?

1. Atlassian states:

Export data from Jira Cloud

Create a backup of your Jira Cloud site, including attachments. Backups help you restore and recover data, or migrate to Jira Server or Jira Data Center.

You can export the following data to backup your Jira Cloud site:

  • Issues

  • Users and user group settings

  • Issue attachments, user avatars, and project logos (if selected)

You can backup your Jira data at any time. However, if you include attachments, avatars, and/or logos, you'll need to allow 48 hours between backups.

  • Because Atlassian calls out some things specifically, like; issues, users and user groups, it makes me question - What exactly is included when I do a backup of my Jira cloud instance?
    • Are advanced roadmaps included in my Jira cloud backup?
    • Roadmaps?
    • Workflows?
    • Schemes?
    • Screens?
    • I know automations are not included and need to be exported separately.

2. Atlassian states:

Back up manager

Create a backup of your current ricoh-bldr.atlassian.net Jira data. You can keep this backup locally or import it into a different Jira cloud site or Jira server instance.

When you create a backup, Jira overwrites any previous backup file on this page. We automatically delete backup files after 14 days.

  • Since Atlassian states that they automatically delete backup files after 14 days
    • Am I correct in interpreting this as:   When we create a backup of our cloud instance it is stored somewhere in Atlassian or in our Jira Cloud instance.
      • So if we backup every night the previous backup will be overwritten unless we have downloaded it and stored it locally.
      • A point in time restore would only be possible if we download the backup every night .

Hi @PATRICIA MURPHY,

The backup option you are referring to is a manual backup option that is available to you, as a customer, to use for an ad hoc scenario. If you would like to e.g. create a copy of your site (with all standard functionality in it) you can use this option.

The backup file is created on your cloud site's file system, but after you create a backup, you will get a download link in the UI to download that file locally.

For disaster recovery purposes, your cloud site is backed up automatically on a daily basis. Files are kept available for 30 days. In case an emergency occurs, you should reach out to Atlassian support to get the right backup retrieved and your site restored as necessary.

If you want to know more about data recovery and safety procedures, have a look at the Atlassian Trust Center.

Hope this helps!

Hi @patricia murphy

I represent GitProtect Jira Backup app (check in Atlassian Marketplace) that supports backup for all Jira data, including Jira Cloud, Jira Service Management and Jira Work Management, such as:

- workflows

- schemes

- roadmaps and advanced roadmaps

- issues

- attachments and many more.

You can check the full list here: https://gitprotect.io/faq/what-is-included-in-backups.html

Then, you can migrate your Jira data to a free Jira account with no-user recovery option if you need to try it and not pay for additional users. For example, in case of any failure, including outages, human errors, and ransomware.

Another important aspect that you mentioned is retention. GitProtect.io offers unlimited retention, so you have an opportunity to keep your data as long as you need, not only for 48 hours.

Moreover, you can assign as many storages as you need, and, what is more, there would be no overwrites in your storage as you can manage and set up your backups by yourself - GFS, Basic.

Check out other features GitProtect.io backup for Jira has: https://gitprotect.io/jira-backup.html
