Looking to create individual burndown charts for closed sprints

Kitty Crawford March 9, 2021

I'm looking to easily create burndown charts of individual team members on closed sprints. There's been some questions about this in the past, but they're over 8 years old and don't seem to apply to the version of JIRA I'm on.

I'm able to get a team burndown easily enough for current and past sprints, but nothing for individuals. Any help here would be useful!

Hi @Kitty Crawford,

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

The only way to do it in Jira without an app would be to create a scrum board for each member, then the burndown chart would be per individual member.

Your other option is to use Advanced Burndown Chart Gadget for Jira

Hey! I've been trying to use that app but I'm finding that when I try to get charts from past sprints, it shows me dates right up until the current day, no matter what date I put in the 'work ends here' field. Will have to reach out to them about that!

Hi @Kitty Crawford  -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Is your request for a team of people using the scrum framework? If so, what problem are you trying to solve by tracking the work of individuals rather than the team?

Thanks, and best regards,

Bill

Hi Bill - yes it's for a team. Basically as a team we're going over estimations, but by eye I can tell that some team members are estimating better than others, and I'm trying to pinpoint the exact area/particular types of tasks we keep estimating incorrectly and by how much so that we can correct and estimate more accurately in future so that I plan future work milestones more sensibly.

Thanks for that information, Kitty.

Rather than going too far back in sprint history, you may want to consider monitoring this sprint-by-sprint to evaluate improvement.  And, perhaps look at team-based sizing methods to help add routine habits to build estimation skills:

  • Definition of done for sizing
  • Sizing ruler: using a comparable prior items to quickly bucket-size items.  For example, exemplar items for size 1, 3, 8... or S, M, L, etc.
  • Things that matter sizing: using a small set of criteria as a checklist to make sizing repeatable and compariable.  For example, specific work needs (FE, BE...) or technology needs.

Best regards,

Bill
