Make a Kanban-board within a Scrum-project the main board

Hello,

I have a project which was created as Scrum, and there was also created a Kanban board within the project. This project has developed quite a bit since it's beginnings, so now the Kanban board is the main board and the original Scrum-board is barely used. It just houses the backlog really, which we can enable in Kanban and that would suit our needs.

Is there a way of making the Kanban-board the "main" board, so we can remove the original board? Or do we have to reconfigure everything in the main board to match the Kanban-board, and then delete the Kanban-board? Would be nice to not have to do that since we have everything set up nicely in the existing Kanban-board.

Welcome to the community.

Boards are 'only' representations of filters. So you can without real harm delete the scrum board. The only thing that is not retrievable are the sprint reports. But since you are not using them, you just can delete the scrum board.

This will make your Kanban board, the main board. Although there is no such thing in Jira as a  main board, but it will be the first (and only) board you land on.

Thanks Rudy. I don't think my mind even went there, I've always considered these boards to be sub to the main. But then I'll give that a go, even if it sounds very scary :)

@Rudy Holtkamp , additional question here. This kanban board is based on an active sprint in the Scrum board, so whenever an issue is placed in this sprint from the Scrum boards backlog it shows up in the Kanban boards To Do. This is done by a filter query on the Kanban board

When deleting the Scrum board, what will the Kanban board then be based on? Will all tasks that are in the To Do column just be visible in the Kanban boards backlog (if activated), if I just remove the filter query? What happens to the active sprint and the issues within, will this just appear in the Kanban board (now the only board) as they were before, based on workflow status?

Can you post the Scrum and Kanban filters here, then I can see if you might get a problem. (By the way, if your delete a board, the underlying filter will still exist.)

@Rudy Holtkamp , it is quite simply:

Scrum: project = [project name] ORDER BY Rank ASC
Kanban: project = [project name] AND Sprint = 3 ORDER BY Rank ASC

So I imagine I would have to delete the filter on the kanban board first, then I can make sure I'm covered still (would have more tasks but all of them would have status To Do and hopefully then only be visible in Kanban backlog). If there isn't another approach you would suggest?

Ok, so your Kanban filter will show only issues that has a sprint=3. 

Since you will remove the Scrum board, I think you should do the following. 

1. Change the Kanban filter, remove the 'and sprint =3' clause
2. I don't know your workflow, but you should consider having a 'backlog' status and a 'selected for development' (or 'to do') status. Then add a backlog column on your Kanban board with the backlog status in it.
   This will give you a similar functionality as before. Only now you will use 1 board.
