Migrate from server to cloud

wdonovan June 8, 2020

We're moving our Jira to the cloud.  Jira Suite Utils is also on our server.  How would that plug-in be migrated to the cloud?  We have 6 months of our license left.

Hi @wdonovan !

Currently this is not directly possible to migrate from Jira server to cloud but we are closely working with Atlassian on migration.

To migrate Jira Server to Jira Cloud in relation to the JSU App, you will need to consider the following things, depending on the functionality you are using:

  • Workflow Condition/Validator/Post-Function:
Workflows are automatically migrated to Jira Cloud... but the Workflow Configuration will be broken. This is due to how Workflow Condition/Validator/Post-Function work on Jira Cloud. All Condition/Validator/Post-Function would need to be recreated.
    • Condition/Validator: Atlassian decided in 2016 to go 'Cloud Native' with their Jira Cloud. They called it the 'big fork' as the started to fork out for Jira Server. Atlassian integrated all Condition & Validators from JSU and you can find for all JSU Condition & Validator a native Jira Cloud Condition/Valdiator. We have a short documentation for customers which are moving from Jira Cloud to Jira Server what kind of changes would need to be performed in the workflow xml, the same applies for the oposit direction. https://confluence-apps.beecom.ch/display/JSU/Migrating+from+Jira+Cloud+to+Jira+Server
    • Post-Functions: Almost all post-functions which we offer on Jira Server, we also offer on Jira Cloud. You need to recreate all of them.
  • Custom Fields
We provide 3 Custom Fields (Location, Location Select & Directions) on the JSU Server App (https://confluence-apps.beecom.ch/display/JSU/Custom+Fields) at the current stage, we do not offer those Custom Fields on Jira Cloud.
  • Project Variables
We offer a functionality to store variable per project which then can be used in Workflow Post-Functions. (https://confluence-apps.beecom.ch/display/JSU/Project+Variables) This is a feature we currently do not offer on Jira Cloud but in our backlog.

In general, we do not have any data, which can be exported and reimported! Workflows are migrated by Jira and Project Variables is something we currently do not offer yet on Jira Cloud.

Site Note: Atlassian is currently working on a Jira Cloud Migration Assistant (https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-Migrations-Early-Access/About-the-Jira-Cloud-Migration-Assistant-early-access-program/gpm-p/1165638) and offers an early access program. Please also have a look at the current limitation. We are working closely with the Atlassian Migration Team to assist with a smooth migration of workflows.

I hope this information helps, but should you need further support, please reach out to us via our Service Desk.

Cheers,
Maria from beecom

Hello @wdonovan welcome to the community. The configuration from the workflows won't work even though you are going to have the same addon in cloud. You will have to recreate all that configuration when you migrate. Optionally, consider working ahead and replicate the workflow on a test cloud environment and then export that workflow.

Then when the migration happens you should need to import them and assign them rather than config them as part of the migration steps. This is very useful when you have plenty of workflows in place

Hi Hernan,

I understand that configurations won't migrate.  Is there any part of the workflow that will migrate?

Yes.. all that is part of the built-in functionalities from Jira will migrate. Add-on specific config will need to be replicated manually

Is you question related to the technical aspect of the migration or the billing of it?
