Moving Data

I have a project with 322 Epics and over two thousand child issues under those epics. I have a query that can retrieve the Epics of course. I need to move the Epics and child links to a new Project.

Will the Bulk Change/Move operation be able to handle moving the epics and all the child issues to the target project?  I note that the Bulk Change/Move prompts for moving the child issues but not sure if it will work and move everything.

Advice appreciated.

Hi @Ruth Russell and welcome to the Community!

Seems like today is moving issues across Jira day :-) ...

When moving issues using bulk change, a wizard will guide you step by step and indicate any potential problems that may occur. The prompts you already see indicate that this will be taken care of.

There will be a step in the wizard that may indicate that the values of certain custom fields may get lost. That can happen when you're moving between team managed projects or if the configuration of your source and target projects is different. If you don't like any warning messages you see, abort the wizard and fix the configuration before proceeding. If there's no alarming messages along the way, just go ahead with the move.

If it would make you feel more reassured, you can always move a single epic with its child issues first and only perform the rest of your bulk move after you have verified the result.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Walter - I'm au fait with the interface and have done Epic Child moves on dummy data and this uncovered a few warnings like Fix Versions and so on that I had to prepare for, so all good on that front. Really I was wondering if there is a limit with the volume of issues to be moved? As I mentioned there are 322 epics and thousands of child issues. Never attempted a large bulk move like that, always a few.  Perhaps I am conflating this with the row retrieval limit.

I believe that (certain) bulk operations are restricted to 1.000 rows at once. But yet again, that will be displayed clearly in the wizard while you are going through the steps. It is definitely possible to perform the move in 2 or 3 iterations if necessary!
