Cannot assign Epic to Story

I have been able to assign Epics to Stories on a project board until a few days ago. The error reads 'You can only set epic links for issues on the task level. Please check your hierarchy configuration settings.' 

Where can I access the hierarchy configuration settings for my project? 

Furthermore, are there aspects of Jira that could be effecting this, maybe some other change in configurations?

"Assign Epics to Stories on a project board" is a little confusing. 

The error message was "You can only set epic links for issues on the task level. Please check your hierarchy configuration settings."

That makes me wonder if you're trying to set the "Epic Link" value on the epic itself, and pointing to the story, rather than setting the story's "Epic Link" to the Epic.

As for the Hierarchy settings, they are not by project, that is a system level setting.

Hi , sorry for the confusion here. I was looking at my list of issues, and a Jira Ticket, Story, was giving me the error when trying to edit the Epic Link. 

I have resolved this issue - I went to the Issue Hierarchy Settings and moved Story from 'Epic Level' to 'Task Level' 

Hope this helps anyone who has a similar issue!
