Creating Issue Templates

DDufrene September 11, 2020

Hi All,

I am looking for a way to create issue templates. This could come in the form of pre-populated system and custom fields that are available on the create screen.  I have come across several other older posts that basically say that pre-populating system fields is not possible in Jira. I would hate to recreate custom versions of system fields.

I have also looked into using Post Functions; however, it seems that those (limited) fields only get populated after the user clicks Create on the create screen (in Server). I thought about giving all of the users import access and providing a xls spreadsheet template to import, but that just seems what to hacky and inconvenient for the users.

One snag to this is that, I am pretty new at Jira. Another snag is that we are soon or later (not sure which) moving away from Server and to Jira cloud. So it would be nice if the solution could work for both.

Does anyone have any ideas or have successfully implemented issue templates for their users. I would love to hear about different solutions others have used to achieve this.

Thanks in advanced!

P.S. I am also well aware of the pitfalls of providing pre-filled field text to users. So, currently the focus is on how can this be done, not if this should be done.

Thanks again.

I think the easiest solution would be to use an app like issue templates for Jira.  It is an additional cost but it has everything you are looking for. https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1211044/issue-templates-for-jira?hosting=server&tab=overview

Hello @DDufrene ,

I am Andrew, service engineer for ThinkTilt, vendor for the product app ProForma.

Based on the details you've provided here for your use-case, I am confident that our ProForma product will suit your needs.

Although ProForma comes with a number of pre-defined form templates for your use, the primary selling point is the ability for you to customise, style and create your own form templates. ProForma forms can be linked to issue types and be shown to the user at issue creation time. The product is portable across all Jira products (Jira Core, Jira Software, Jira Service Desk) and platforms (Cloud, Server, Data Center) so they can linked to portal requests if you're using JSD. We also have an "Issue Forms" feature where users can initiate creation of an issue using the form directly.

The good news: One of the features of our question fields in building ProForma forms is that pre-populating these fields with answers can be done to save time!

Another is the ability to link ProForma question fields to Jira fields, whether they be system or custom Jira fields.

Field questions in ProForma forms can be set either as mandatory or voluntary. Any validations on fields are applied when the form is submitted by the user.

Check out our product and documentation here.

Let us know how you go.
