My team uses a Business Project - we recently added the Epic Issue Type for large-scale projects. Overall this works, but one problem is that while we can add Tasks as the Issues beneath the Epic (as well as Sub-Tasks within each Task), the Tasks within an Epic display on list view. To clarify, the structure is Epic > Task > Sub-Task.
Sub-Tasks display only within the expandable arrow, meaning they are hidden by default when a Task is visible on List view (and Board view as well). However, the Tasks within each Epic are automatically visible as if they are unique items. In fact, these Tasks within an Epic do not display at all when clicking the expandable arrow of the Epic.
This is an attempt to capture the issue using Board view with PID hidden. Thanks in advance for any guidance, Community!
Is the problem that both the epics and tasks are appearing in your kanban as distinct items, despite the tasks rolling up to the epic?
In a kanban, standard issue types which fit the board filter will always appear as distinct cards. For this reason, I'd recommend only filtering in the issues where the work is happening, thus only including Tasks and Sub-Tasks in your board filter.
The Epic status is essentially just inferred by the work beneath it. Do you use automation for Jira? It can be helpful for automating status roll up when issues in an epic are moved into progress or completed.
Thanks so much, Patty - this is very helpful. I'll advise my team to exclude Epics using filters so that only issues where is happening will appear. Much appreciated!
