Auto-assign on transition only if assignee is blank

I'm currently using the post function to automatically assign an issue to the user who moves it to the status of "In Progress," but I don't want to do that if the issue is already assigned to someone else. Is there a way to check before auto-assigning?

@Erin Neufeld, that is not possible out of the box. You could accomplish this by creating an automation rule instead.

Thanks for the answer. That's exactly what I did. There is a slight UI delay when using the automation vs. using the transition, but it will work fine. Thanks again!
