Hi,

I am setting up an automation when Epic is created to create several tasks within epic.

I have no idea how to get the Epic link from the initiating Epic that starts the automation. Would be super happy if you could help me with Epic Link. With setting the field Epic link it just gives me a dropdown with existing epics but no smart value.

Thanks!

Hi Corinna

Something like this may be what you are looking for

The edit issue fields edits the epic link to copy from trigger issue

@Jeff Pittman

If you are asking for help, please provide more information such as:

- are you using Jira Cloud or Jira Server/Data Center?

- if Jira Cloud are you working with a Team Managed project or Company Managed project?

- show us the Rule in your environment

- show us the audit log for the rule execution

- tell us exactly what "doesn't work" means in your case.

Also, as this ticket is a year old you should start a new Question to get additional help.

I wonder if the suggestion from @Support Team [Clearvision] will actually work, as the trigger issue (the Epic) does not actually include an Epic Link field. I haven't tried it to find out.

I think you would need to use the More Options option and use smart values to get the issue key from the triggering issue and set that value in the Epic Link field.

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/smart-values-general/#Smartvaluesgeneral---triggerIssue--

Also, just to confirm, are you working with a Company Managed project or a Team Managed project? Team Managed projects don't use the Epic Link field.

Hi Trudy

As said this was an example that I found to work and seemed to match the requirement. The screenshots were from a automation rule I set up in a test project.

I tried this in a company managed project and appeared to work as expected.

I can see the tasks created when viewing the created epic issue in the Issues in this epic panel. I can see the epic name in the epic link field on the created tasks.
