Cannot change creation status

Somehow, the status all of my issues start in was updated to another status than "To Do" and JIRA will not allow me to transition it back:

Unfortunately, I have tried all of the above. The issue is that no matter what I do to "TESTING" (renamed and recategorized specifically for the screenshot I shared) and no matter how many other "To Do" status types I have, it will not let me move the start path away from "TESTING":

  1. I've tried deleting the "TESTING" status, but Jira won't let me (the "Delete" button is greyed out)
  2. I've updated it to Status Type "To Do"
  3. I've created other Status Types "To Do"
  4. I've attempted to rename "TESTING" to "To Do" (was told another Status with that name already existed, even if I had already deleted all other Statuses from the flow, saved, and tried again).

For some reason, the Jira Workflow will not let me move the started to any other status than the one currently named "TESTING"

@john @Mirek First, thank you so much for your fast responses. It is great to have my first experience here feel supported.

Hi Brett - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Status Category is not the same thing as the Status. The Status Category has just three options - To Do, In Progress, or Done. All statuses must fall into one of these categories.

So the To Do status is not the same as the To Do status category. Although it probably has that category. The error message is saying you can't start in an In Progress status category. That's what Testing is in your example (In Progress category has the blue color to it).

You can try what Mirek suggests if it will let you change the category. Or maybe add a new column to the board (make it the first column) with a new status of a different name, and then switch them out later.

Can you try to Delete the Testing status?

I have, Jira won't let me. I've also updated the original post with those details. Thanks again for your response!

I would go ahead and submit a Support Ticket with Atlassian then. We can speculate a lot but it is probably better to get them involved now. Sorry I couldn't help more

Would you suggest I "Accept Answer" this? or does this just remain open?

Hi @Brett Hall ,

Maybe you can temporary change the TESTING status to "to do" category and then try to switch it?
