Jose Julio August 14, 2023

Can you help me with the steps to migrate a complete Project from Jira Server to the Jira Cloud?
There are other options to migrate differently to using Jira Cloud Migration Assistant.

Hi @Jose Julio

I'm also curious why you're unable to use JCMA - this is a great free option to migrate projects from Jira Server to Jira Cloud.

Since you mentioned you're looking for alternatives, there's a Marketplace app by Appfire, Configuration Manager for Jira (CMJ) on Cloud, which can perform migrations of projects from Jira Server or DC to Cloud. CMJ is ideal for teams that need to merge data into existing (in-use) Cloud sites or want to perform multiple migrations to the same cloud site because it won't duplicate data that already exists. It also has some great pre-migration cleanup and integrity checking features.

Best of luck with your migration!

@Jose Julio

Just to clarify, are you saying you cannot use JCMA? If so, why not?

Thanks,

Kian

Hello.

Thank you for answering my query, I have tried to use it but I have not been successful in using it.

I have a Jira Server environment, a specific project I am interested in migrating it to Jira Cloud.

What I have done is to go to the administrative part of Jira in projects select lsitar all projects in the lower part select project configuration, then select the option export project I indicate the project I want to export in the option "export mode" I put confiuration only, however this option "Complete Project", once I select configuration only it indicates the name of the file to be exported with extension .xml I leave all the default options and say export project after about 10 or 15 minutes it generates the file.

Then I go to Jira Cloud I enter as administrator select the Project option and take the option Import Data, gives me the options Import into a new business Project and Import into or existing software project, select the option "Import into a or existing software project" is presented to the option Import Jira Server, I check the box that says I've migrated user data using the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant I give the option Import data goes through the first verification and cuadno termna the second verification tells me error

I have a doubt that when I experienced the project I definitely did not use the Jira CLoud Migration Assistant.

In the Jira server I have Jira 7.6 but it does not give me options to export the project with Jira Cloud Migration Assistant.

I don't know if with this information I can give a better view of what I want to do and if I am doing it wrong or if you can guide me.

Thanks

Hi Jose,

Have you seen the instructions on this page? https://support.atlassian.com/migration/docs/choose-what-jira-data-to-migrate-using-the-assistant/

I think you're trying with project export/import, whereas the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant is a different mechanism for moving the project. Try the above and let us know if that got you what you need.

You may also want to bookmark this page which has lots of resources around the cloud migration assistant: https://support.atlassian.com/migration/docs/jira-cloud-migration-assistant/

Best,

Kelsey

Hi @Jose Julio

There are numerous tools available in the market that facilitate the migration of data from Jira Server to Cloud. However, it's important to note that migration projects are typically complex endeavors and necessitate careful planning and strategic execution.

When evaluating a third-party migration tool, consider the following criteria:

  • Cost of Disruption and Downtime: Factor in the potential costs associated with disruption and downtime during the migration process.
  • Migration Approach: Determine whether a 'big bang' approach, involving the simultaneous migration of all users, is suitable, or if teams can transition in a phased manner while maintaining inter-team collaboration.
  • Required Jira Version: Check if your Jira instance needs to be upgraded to a specific version prior to migration.
  • Dual Access and Synchronization: Confirm if users will have access to both the source and target systems during the migration, and if changes made in the target system can be synced back to the source.
  • Total Cost of Migration: Account for data transfer expenses, downtime, disruptions, and potential information loss when estimating the overall cost of migration.
  • Recovery and Rollback Plan: Establish a plan for recovery or rollback in the event of a migration failure or interruption.
  • Field Scheme Configuration Differences: Analyze any disparities in field scheme configurations between your Server and on-cloud instances and devise a strategy for addressing them if necessary.
  • Scripting Requirements: Be aware of tools that may rely on unsupported beta versions of scripts, as they could demand a high level of expertise and consultant involvement. Determine which aspects of the migration process might require scripting and your team's involvement.                                                                                                            OpsHub has extensive experience in undertaking complex migration projects ensuring zero downtime, no data loss, complete date integrity and full ownership of the migration process can be a good choice for the given job. It supports the migration of System & Custom Issue Types, Sub-Task Types, Version and Worklog, etc. from any Jira Server version to Jira Cloud.

Please reach out to OpsHub’s Migration Experts, for an initial discussion on migration planning.

Thanks,

Brad
