I want to move my existing Jira data to the cloud.

Deleted user August 24, 2020

I used Jira, version is 6.3, on my server.

But my server is very old, so I decide move it to Jira Cloud with my data.

How can I move whole data?

Hi,

I would suggest first upgrade the Jira to 8.5.5 atleast then move the Jira Cloud.

Jira upgrade steps will be:

1. 6.3 to 7.0.11

2. 7.0.11 to 7.6.17

After 2nd step, If you are using MSSQL then you need to fix the DB collation errors. If you have small DB size then, create a new DB and change the collation to SQL_Latin1_General_CP437_CI_AI then and then export the entire instance stop the jira service. Update the DB config to connect to new DB and then start the Jira service and import. Here is the indepth article.

3. 7.6.17 to 8.5.5.

If you have any plugins, if they need upgrade with each setup, please do so. Some of the plugins dont need licenses in Jira 6.3. Post upgrade to 7 or 7.6 or 8.5 they may need licenses. So do plan that as well.

We have followed the same to upgrade our 6.3.15 to 8.5.4. I recommend 8.5.5 as this is the latest version in 8.5 enterprise release.

Once you are on 8.5.5 then you can easily migrate to cloud.

Do try these steps in pre-production env before doing it in prod.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I have two questions.

Q1: My license key is only for the 6.3 version. How can use other versions?

Q2: I've used PostgreSQL. In this case, is there no need to worry about the DB issues?

A1: If your license is valid with a future date then the same license will work post upgrade.

A2: With PostgreSQL there are no DB collation issues.

Also the cloud have a different license, so your server license will not work post cloud migration. You need to purchase cloud license.

Thank you.

Unfortunately, my licence was expired.

So I was decided to move to Cloud. But the data of 6.3 server version can't be applied right away, so you're trying to find a way.

I would suggest, take it as 1 month project, put a temporary license and upgrade to 8.5.5 in a week time in preprod, next week upgrade to prod. 3rd week you can explore the cloud migration and 4th week you can migrate to cloud.
