In my default workflows I want to copy fields from Epic to linked user stories?

Craig Finlayson June 17, 2020

As part of my create transition (in default workflow) I have added a copy field value to linked issues function. I have used a custom field we have. Basically I want this field to be filled in based on the value within the Epic, so inherit epic values to the user stories. Can this be done without a plugin?

I have tried this using workflow post function but nothing seems to happen

Hi Craig,

Why type of project is this? Next-gen? Classic Software?

You might be able to use Automation for Jira which now comes with Jira Cloud at no cost.

Can you explain or give an exact example of what you want to do?

Hi John this is classic software. We created an accounting code custom field for all our epics. When our team works on user stories within that epic that they create I want that accounting code to be inherited on the user story upon the user story being created. Does that make sense?

Sure that makes sense and should be easily doable with Automation For Jira. And it comes free with Jira Cloud now. Here's some information to get you started. Feel free to post more questions for additional help.  :-)

There are two types of automation:

  • Global: In the Free version, you get 100 executions per product, per month
  • Project: In all versions, you get unlimited executions per month

Automation Basics: https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/guides/expand-jira/automation

You can do this via global rules to apply to all projects also. You'll need to be a Jira Admin/Site Admin, go to Jira Settings > System > Automation Rules (left-hand menu).

For more on using Automation For Jira see these help pages.

Thanks John, I cannot see an app that is free called 'Automation for JIRA' can you point to it's whereabouts?

It's fine John this worked a treat for me. Found the automation rules. Now the only thing I need to be able to do is please if you think you can help with this issue drop a note on it. Many thanks.
