OpsGenie: keep participant in order

Hi all,

When removing a participant from the oncall rotation, most of the time it will ask "To keep the participants in order, Start Time of xx Rotation has been updated" which update the Start Date, but sometimes it doesn't.  We do not see any reason or pattern. Could someone please explain?

(Also, if there is a better place to ask questions about OpsGenie, please let me know.)

Thank you,

Zekai

Hi @Zekai Huang My name is Habib this might be able to answer your questions with a solution as well if this works please accept the answer on here as well so it can help others.

The "To keep the participants in order, Start Time of xx Rotation has been updated" message is shown when you remove a participant from an on-call rotation that has already started, and OpsGenie needs to adjust the start time of the rotation to maintain the correct order of the remaining participants.
The start time of an on-call rotation determines the order in which the participants are contacted when an alert is triggered.
If a participant is removed from the rotation, the start time may need to be adjusted to maintain the correct order of the remaining participants.OpsGenie will automatically adjust the start time of the rotation if necessary, but in some cases, it may not be able to do so. Here are some reasons why this might happen:

  1. The rotation has already ended: If the rotation has already ended, OpsGenie will not adjust the start time of the rotation.
  2. The remaining participants have different schedules: If the remaining participants have different schedules, OpsGenie may not be able to adjust the start time of the rotation while maintaining the correct order of the participants.
  3. The rotation has a custom schedule: If the rotation has a custom schedule that is not based on a fixed start time, OpsGenie may not be able to adjust the start time of the rotation.

If OpsGenie is unable to adjust the start time of the rotation, you may need to manually update the start time to maintain the correct order of the participants. To do this:

  1. Go to the on-call schedule that contains the rotation.
  2. Click on the rotation that you want to update.
  3. Click on the "Edit" button.
  4. Adjust the start time of the rotation as necessary.
  5. Save your changes.
By following these steps, you can manually update the start time of the rotation to maintain the correct order of the participants, even if OpsGenie is unable to do so automatically.
I hope this helps.
Thank you

Thank you for the detailed response, Habib. We were able to manually update that, just want to know why sometimes it doesn't give that headsup. The first and last scenarios make sense to me. Could you elaborate more on the 2nd one -- different from what?

"The remaining participants have different schedules: If the remaining participants have different schedules, OpsGenie may not be able to adjust the start time of the rotation while maintaining the correct order of the participants."
