When I am working on a JIRA ticket, I often want to create comments.
I have permission to do this, but the form often seems to malfunction.
No sooner do I type something, but it disappears.
As a workaround, I can type something into Notepad and then cut and paste it, but this is terribly inconvienent.
This is a problem for me and my team. We're mostly on Chrome Version 124.0.6367.208 (Official Build) (64-bit) on PC.
This happens for me too now on Chrome. I push 1 key and then the textarea loses focus so I have to type in Notepad and cut/paste it in so I can have 1 keypress event.

Glad root case has at least been identified.

Both employers are hosted on different domains.
I don't know enough about JIRA implementation details to answer how truly separate they are.
How can I bring this to the attention of support?
I try to report a bug and I only get options to explore the community and to view documentation.

My instinct here is that there may be something wrong in your browser. Two Atlassian sites showing the same problem to you (but not to other people) suggests the problem is client-side, rather than server.
I know I have problems with Atlassian sites regularly, but when it's not something my colleagues are also finding, I take the blame because my main browser is piled high with privacy and security measures and it's almost always one of them.
Whatever the cause though, it's always worth reporting. Before trying to report it, I would try another browser, one with no add-ons ideally. (My web usage is probably 74% firefox, and 25% chrome based. I tend to keep a totally plugin-free, OS installed, Safari on all my computers, just so I can yell "standard off-the-shelf browser" at any support people who try the "it's your browser" line.
On your last point, the free and $10 licences are not entitled to "full" support, and get directed to the community. We do try to help, but we're not really a support team. But we do try, and whilst I've not run into your problem myself, I do know there are people reading this that have.

Hi Brian, welcome to the Community. That sure seems odd as stated. Is this reproducible? If so please share more info. It may be that you will have to work with Atlassian Support if reproducible as they can log in and observe.

I've been able to reproduce that issue for several months, even changing employers.
It is an intermittent issue, but I've noticed it with drastically increasing frequency.

I have never experienced this TBH. You mention changing employers, does this mean you are seeing on different instances of Jira? If so, have you tried different browsers? If you are seeing on multiple browsers please report to Atlassian Support.

Hi Brian/Jack, I'm having the same issue on Chrome Browser. I click "add comment" and then start typing, but my comments are not entered, and my keystrokes are interpreted as keyboard shortcuts.

Having this same behaviour. It actually started in firefox, so I switched to chrome, and now it's happening in chrome. Kinda hard to use Jira when you can't type anything...

@brad_broten , If this is repeatable please contact Support. I am not experiencing this behavior.

It’s still an issue 1.5 years later. I just have to refresh the page several times until i can type in the text boxes

@Jack Brickey yes, I've tried to report it but since I don't have our company's license info I can't get very far.
But also consider that this is a very very basic thing - typing into a comment box - how can Jira be the only thing on the entire planet that has this problem? Coupled with their ridiculous parsing so If I try to paste something with certain character combinations I can actually crash our server. Why? Just follow a convention and use what everyone else on the planet has seemed to figure out how to use. Problem solved.

Hi @brad_broten .
I get your frustrated. First let me be clear, I do not work for Atlassian so any response from me is as a user of the product.
======
Yes being able to add a comment and type into a text field is extremely basic feature. This capability works fine for me and I suspect most everyone else.
I am unsure why you're experiencing the problem to be honest. You mentioned pasting text in and crashing your server which tells me that you are actually running on the Server platform not Cloud which was the original platform associated with this post. My only point of bringing this up is that the behavior between the two platforms is indeed different. However not so much regarding simply entering data into a text field. Just curious, what version of server are you running? It may be that this behavior has been addressed in a later version.
You mention that you were unable to report a bug. I suspect this is because you are not listed as the technical contact. Is that possible? Assuming so I recommend contacting you're a Jira admin and discussing the problems that you're having such that they can diagnose and if need be contact Atlassian support.
I do hope that your issue gets addressed so that your CSAT improves. It can be quite frustrating when simple things don't work.

Not that it helps you in the least, just a data point.
I use Safari and Firefox and on very rare occasions Chrome and never Edge ;-). I have several different instances of Jira and have yet to experience this problem. At least to the best of my recollection.
Are you running on Cloud? Have you attempted to open a ticket with Atlassian support? I would really like to see someone experiencing this work with Atlassian support and get an answer. That answer could be added here for the benefit of others.

Another data-point to support @Jack Brickey 's comments.
I have seen this problem a couple of times, unlike him, but I've always been able to fix it, and it has never been limited to Jira - once it starts happening in Jira, it happens in all the websites that let me type (rich) text.
Two years ago, I said my browser usage was 74% Firefox, 25% Chrome, but today, it's a different story - 85% Chrome, 14% Firefox, 1% Other (which still does not include any use of MS browsers)
Every time I've seen this issue, it's been down to my browser. And almost always the extensions in them.

That makes sense Nic. The only extension I use is 1Password.

Thanks guys I appreciate the notes. My experience is a bit different, though, I first got it in firefox and yes it absolutely 100% was ONLY in Jira. I discovered at that time that it did work in Chrome. So I worked for a while switching to Chrome for Jira. But we have so many things that automatically open up Jira pages that I was constantly wasting time trying to post comments only to realize I needed to switch to chrome. So I bit the bullet and switched to Chrome for everything - which was a huge pain. But now it's happening in Chrome. And yes, again, it is ONLY the Jira widgets. I don't install any extensions (at least knowingly) nor do I see any obvious recent changes that way.
As far as what I am doing, I'll put it like this - I'm not doing anything different than normal everyday things that I do on other sites all over the planet. It is *absolutely* only Jira that gives these issues (excepting of course known limitations clearly noted on particular sites)
So again, I guess the ask is why not just make Jira behave like every other site and just take what I put in, no matter what, and keep my formatting, no matter how dumb it thinks it is. If I want it to parse through some special Jira interpreter, that should be something that I initiate (i.e., a button, a config setting, etc.)

>the ask is why not just make Jira behave like every other site
This is where the problem is. It does behave like every other site that has clever editors for text boxes. They're using tech that fits with standards that loads of other sites use. (Not necessarily content, I am only talking about the click/edit/format processes in your browser)
