Why does the "select sprint" option go away for some projects when I create an issue?

Isaac Davenport August 10, 2020

I have a classic software project, project EMU.  I think EMU was created without a scrum board.  Our company uses one master scrum board from which we prioritize tasks amongst several projects.  I created a dummy project "Actall Master Project" to have a master company wide scrum board pulling in from 2-3 active projects at a time.  I think update my filter for the board on that dummy project to pull in tasks from the currently active projects.

I could add the classic software project EMU to the filter for our master scrum board along side of the other active projects we groom tasks for out of our single backlog.  But when I create a task and switch the project to project EMU, the sprint selection pull down box goes away.  I can drag tasks from the shared backlog into our current company-wide sprint.  But I can't select the sprint while creating a task for project EMU.  I actually created a dummy sprint within the EMU project to see if that would enable the menu pick, but it did not.  Screen shots for the Dummy project "Actall Master Project" which allows me to assign its tasks to sprints and the active EMU project which doesn't allow me to assign its tasks to sprints are below.

Hi @Isaac Davenport

Is the "Sprint" field on the screen associated with EMU / Tasks?

As a Project Admin, you can check this:

  1. Go to Project Settings > Screens
  2. Expand the Screen Scheme Task sits under (use the little arrow the left of the scheme name)
  3. Select the screen for "Create"

If Sprint is not on this screen - you'll need to add it. If the screen is not shared with another project and you have the extended permissions, you might be able to modify it from this screen.

If not, you'll need to be a Jira Admin and modify it via Jira Settings > Issues > Screens.

Let us know if this resolves the issue - if not, let us know so we can assist further :)

Thanks.  I wasn't able to edit the screen scheme using your instructions exactly as I didn't have a little arrow to the left of scheme names anywhere.  But I could change the screen scheme to be the one used by the Actall Master Dummy project and that gave me the ability to select sprints when I create a new task under my EMU project.  Thanks!

For posterity the click sequence for me in Jira Cloud for this classic project (not next-gen) was this:

Click in the search bar and go to the bottom to click all projects (not intuitive to have to use search to bring up a menu pick for projects)

Click on my project (project EMU) from the project list

Click on the gear icon for project settings in the left window  pane at the very bottom

Click on "screens" below "workflow" and above "fields" in the left window pane

In this "Screens" page I clicked on the gear icon for "Actions" in the upper right to change the "screen scheme"

Stephen Wright's suggestion was to click on the small arrow to the left of my "WBI: Software Development Default Screen Scheme" which included the screen scheme for "Task" issues.  This scheme was also shared for "Epics" "Improvements" etc.  I could click on the screen for create issue now set to "LR: Software Development Default Issue Screen"  which would take me to a panel that allows me to configure which options show up on the screen when I create an issue of type task using that screen scheme.

Hi @Isaac Davenport

For ease in future, there's a few methods for getting to the right project other than via the search bar button:

  • Projects: There should be a drop-down button on the main navigation bar, near the left-hand side. It also lists recent projects.
  • Your Work: Also lists recent projects - and there's a link to view all.
  • Cog Icon: Depending on your administration access, press the cog icon in the top-right and select "Projects". Find your project and on the right-hand side press the breadcrumbs (3-dots icon) and select "Project Settings"
  • Search: You can search in the quick-search bar, and projects appear near the bottom below issue matches

Lots of options depending on which is easiest for you! :)

Thanks.  I tend to go right to my sprint board since that is where we work.  I can't click on the Actall Master Project Dummy there and change the project, but I notice that above the Backlog label, there is a Project hyperlink preceding Actall Master Project I can use as well.  The cog icon takes me to manage projects, whereas the hyperlink above backlog and the projects pull down between "Your Work" and "Filters" take me to a "view projects" list.  I guess I still haven't fully moved on from the old look and feel.
