Time Tracking Report for Sprints instead for Versions

Gunther August 26, 2021

In sprint planning we create and estimate all sub-tasks in minutes and compare the total with the previously estimated story points of all stories.

Therefore a total for the sprint would be very helpful.

Filtering does not help, because there will be no total time.

Hi @Gunther

As the free license for Jira doesn't have a built-in way to do this, you could get an app from the marketplace, or...

  1. free, easy, manual: Create a filter which returns the issues, export to a spreadsheet and quickly sum the results
  2. free, easy, semi-automated: Create a filter which returns the issues, and then use the Jira add-in for Excel or Google Sheets to consume your filter and sum/report your results
  3. free, complex, automated, requires you to learn a lot: Create a manually triggered automation rule, which calls the REST API with a web request with JQL to get your issues, and sum the estimates.  You could see the result as a comment, in an email, in a Slack message, etc.

Best regards,
Bill

Are you saying you want to see the total time estimate for work in a sprint, so you can compare that to the story point estimates for the same work?

Are you working with a Company Managed project or a Team Managed project?

Is this something you want specifically during sprint planning? Your use case is not about having this for active sprints?

Hi Trudy

Yes

The estimates for the technical sub-tasks in minutes are more acurate than the story point estimates. As soon as we have the total in minutes we know if we can add more stories to the sprint or if we have to remove some.

During the sprint the minutes are used to check progress on individual level.

Team managed projects do not have this report.

I'm not finding any built-in method to get the total estimated time for a planned sprint (before it is started).

In another post I found a reference to using the third party app Adaptavist Scriptrunner to get something like that

https://scriptrunner.adaptavist.com/latest/jira/jql-functions.html#_aggregateexpression

There might be other apps available that extend Jira reporting capabilities that could also provide a solution.
