Updating Jira core server licences to data center

Crisovsky99 September 8, 2023 edited

Hi, in our company we have few Jira environments with different server licences:

1env. Jira core (2000 users)

2env. Jira core (100 users) + jira software (250 users)

Within next months we would upgrade our jira's licences from server to data center but i have some questions:

1. I tried to find informations about jira core data center license, but i couldn't find any informations about this. Is jira core also available in data center?

2. If jira core isn't available in data center i was thinking about purchase jira software data center license, but how should i update this license in environments? This is my plan:

  1. Installing jira software at 1env by Administration > Applications > Versions & licenses
  2. Deleting current licences at 1env and 2env.
  3. Add new licences data center: software (2000 users) to 1env and software (500 users) to 2env.

Thanks in advance, Krystian

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

First, Jira Core was effectively renamed to Jira Work Management quite a while ago.

If you want to carry on with the same structure, then you will need to buy:

DC1:  2000 JWM users

DC2:  500 JWM users + 500 Software users

With DC2, I would drop the JWM users, let everyone have Software, as they get access to JWM as well.

So broadly, your plan is correct.

However, in 2024, that will no longer work - JWM will have to be bought separately, like JSM and JSW but, I understand that when that cut-off comes, anyone on the current scheme will continue to be able to use JWM as part of Software (or JSM) as they do now.

Applying the licences is simple - get the keys from your account, and go to the licence page.  You don't need to delete, just paste the new key over the old one.

There are two notes of caution here though:

Converting a Server to a DC node by just applying the licences works fine, but it's not an ideal way to build a node.  You should really start with a clean installation of DC.  If you ever plan to add more nodes, you will need to do some reconfiguration work on the current node to get it to fit in with the new one(s)

Do not neglect your app licences - you will need to buy DC licences for all of them as well, and ideally, install them all at the same time as the main licence

Hi @Crisovsky99 welcome to the community!  I found this page which refers to Jira Core Data Center: Jira Core

If you have specific licensing questions, I would suggest raising an issue with support (support.atlassian.com/contact) for more information.

Hope that helps.
