Where to find the Jira Roadmap Backlog

sinan.ucak April 7, 2020

Hi Atlassians,

I'm pretty new to Jira and and the Product Management world and I'm looking for a way to classify the issues in our backlog on "readiness". After doing some online searching, I have found the below image which does exactly what I need, but I cannot find where this feature is in my menus.

Screenshot 2020-04-07 at 12.05.58.png Has anybody used this before ? Does it still exist ? If not, are there any worthy replacements ?

Thanks in advance for your support on this one !

Best regards,

Hi @sinan.ucak , welcome to the Community. That screenshot looks like it came from Server whereas you are on Cloud. Also, that looks like something someone manually created via a Kanban board or possibly an addon. Maybe you could share the link where you found this so I could comment further.

That said, what exactly are you wanting to achieve. Certainly there is the ability to have a backlog for any board. If I understand your goals I’m sure I could offer further guidance. In the meantime this article might be useful - use-your-kanban-backlog

Hi Jack,

Thanks for the welcome and your quick response !

I found the image here : https://www.idalko.com/jira-backlog-management/

Basically, I am trying to organize our Jira platform into something that's easily usable for the Product Owner on a day to day basis. I inherited a Jira Scrum board (for a Classic project type) that was just a list of issues (stories, epics, bugs, etc), with no real organisation or process. What I want to do is as follows :

  1. Create a board where we can view the "readiness" of all of our stories. This will be used mainly for Sprint Planning sessions and Backlog Refinement sessions so that we don't have to go through ALL of our tickets to select which ones we need/want/can implement. Ideally, something that's exactly like the picture I sent before.
  2. Create a roadmap that shows when each story is planned to be implemented. This is so that everyone in the organisation has an idea of how the product will evolve over the coming months. Ideally, it would be a sort of 3-Sprint rolling calendar where each Sprint is a "bucket" filled with the stories that are planned to be implemented. I'm looking into EasyAgile Roadmap, but I can't see the stories that are planned in each of the Sprints yet.

I'm guessing these functionalities all exist somewhere in Jira or in the marketplace, but I'm struggling to find simple solutions for them. Any ideas and experience is welcome !

Best regards,

Sinan, sorry for the delay getting back.

So here are some options for you to consider.

  • simply use the OOTB Backlog view and enable Ranking. This allows you or PMs to stack rank the list of issue. Those at the top are the most important and the most "ready". This works well for most folks however, there is no line or swimlanes delineating "readiness".
  • consider using two boards: Planning and Development that as an example looks like this:
    • Planning Statuses: Idea --> Vetted --> Requirements Done --> Approved
    • Development Statuses: Approved --> In Progress --> QA --> Done
    • the Planning board can be a Kanban while development a scrum
    • you note that the two boards share the Approved status. In Planning it represents 'done' while in Development it represent To Do. Once an issue move out of Approved (In Progress) then it disappears from the Planning board.
    • The entire Workflow is singular and split across the two boards.

I have used, successfully, the second option. It is a bit waterfall-ish but it works.

hope this helps!

Hi Jack,

Thanks for your response and your explanations, and I apologize for my late reply.

I do like what you proposed with the 2 boards, for planning and for development. I have started developing that angle, with the workflow that needs to go with it. I think it is the most visual approach and it seems that the team appreciates seeing the stories evolve and gain "maturity" along the planning process.

I'm still looking for a way to visually display when our stories will be developed over time. It's somewhere between a roadmap and a timeline where the sprints are represented as "buckets", filled with the stories that are being developed during those sprints. So for example :

Sprint 1 (15th of April - 29th of April)

  • As a user, I can take a test
  • As a user, I can see the results of my tests
  • As a manager, I can see the results of the tests of my employees

Sprint 2 (30th of April - 14th of May)

  • As a manager, I can delete a test
  • As a user, I can update my bio info
  • As a manager, I can add users to my team

Each story is 1 ticket in Jira, so I can associate tickets with Sprints in the software, but I cannot visualise them along a timeline. The objective is so that every department in the company knows when they can expect which features.

I could develop something on Excel, but if there is a way to implement this directly in Jira, it would be the most ideal solution :)

Thanks again for taking the time to help me out and I look forward to your response !

Best regards,

Sinan
