Why does pasting a numbered list into Jira turn into all 1's?

When I have a numbered list in a separate document (MS Word) and try to copy and paste it into the description field in Jira (cloud version), it changes the list numbers to all ones. If I highlight the list and click the "numbered list" icon at the top of the description field twice, it corrects the issue, but doesn't seem like it should happen in the first place. Any ideas why this is happening and what to do about it?

Hi @GregPearson

It's to do with how Microsoft Word formats text, and how Jira does.

Jira uses wiki markdown, which doesn't match Word - so that's why it's happening.

Your options are...

  • Converter: Look for a markdown converter, and copy text from Word into it, before copying into Jira
  • Save: Look if it's possible to save your Word files as markdown (.md) before copying/pasting
  • Other Document Type: Look for a document type on your OS that can be saved as .md - such as notepad

That's great information to know, thank you! I will look into those as options.

Hi @GregPearson

I found another option today which might be of use:

  1. Copy the text from Microsoft Word
  2. Right-click in Jira, in a text box - so it moves into edit mode
  3. Select Paste and Match Style

^ This worked for me, copying from TextEdit on my Macbook!
