BigPicture task hierarchy for epics, stories, and tasks

Ian Balas

Hey guys,

So I'm using BigPicture plugin along with a project in JIRA Software to manage tasks/projects for marketing team at my job.

I was able to arrange the task hierarchy in the WBS so that it was able to automatically nest subtasks under stories. But when I created an epic, I noticed that the stories linked to that epic won't nest under it in the BigPicture Gantt. Any way I can fix this or have it automatically nest stories under their epics?

Thanks,

Ian Balas

Hi All,

If you were using the next-gen project there was no Epic Link -meaning you couldn't synchronize epics, that was due to Atlassian limitations. That has been changed recently and we are in the process of developing this functionality. (please find details in related feature ticket - https://softwareplant.com/jira/browse/ONE-20382)

Please have a look at the full list of missing features and functionalities in nex-gen - here.

We really want to see child tasks nested under their parent Epic. This is important for us. Should we revert to using all Classic Software Projects?

Tomasz, I noticed the related feature ticket is awaiting release —Do you know when this will be available? It's a major feature that we are waiting on.

Same here. We are looking to buy this plugin, but it isn't of much use without this feature.

Hello Software Plant,

I was wondering as well when this would be released, currently this missing feature makes the whole plugin not suitable for our use.

Thank you for your consideration

I contacted support last week. Apparently it is on schedule for end of June. Hopefully sooner rather than later. Currently I am checking the status of this ticket everyday. You can see it here: https://jira.softwareplant.com/browse/ONE-20616

Hi guys, are there any news?
The status of the story says "waiting for release"

Does anyone know, when this important feature will come out?

They are probably busy sorting their punch cards, and we will get the update in a box with a paper manual. Old school 90's release cadence on a 2020 feature... :P

Hi,

To structure the issues by Epic you need to open the program configuration > Synchronization tab > Scroll all the way down > Select the Synchronize Epics.

Let us know if you have any further questions.

Paolone March 25, 2019

Thanks, this solved for me too.

A further question: after I activated "Synchronize Epics", a colleague visited the program Gantt and couldn't see the new structure grouped by Epic. After playing around with "group task" option in columns settings (activating and deactivating it) he managed to get the new view grouped by Epics. Is this and expected behavior?

I had the same problem:

1. Followed Marek's instructions

2. On Gantt view, tasks/stories are still not organized under Epics

So I did the following:

1. On Synchronization tab, reordered the order in which issues are synchronized:

2. Back on Gantt view, choose Data > Re-Sync

For me, it still didn't work until I clicked Data > Group Tasks > by Key, and then removing the grouping (Data > Group Tasks > deselect "Key"). So maybe it's a bug with the UI.

Same issue here.  I've configured my setup exactly as Rachel Richardson described above, and I re-sync'd, but my stories appear in a flat list.  They are not indented from their epics as they should be.

I manage other projects that were set up some months back, and I was able to get the proper indenting behavior, but I can no longer.  I'm not sure if something changed or I've forgotten the secret sauce.  I know it was tricky in the past, even when I did get it to ultimately work.

Have you tried ticking the task types tick box as well as the automated task stucture (this is cloud)

Thanks, @David I, you got it right :)

Since the 'Task types' and 'Automated task structure' sections were confusing, we united them, so there is a single 'Task structure' section now. The screen capture setup is for Epic - Feature - Story hierarchy.

Hi Marcin, I am trying BigPicture and am really struggling with showing the right structure in Gantt for Epics-Stories-Subtasks hierarchy. We also want to show the "has to start before" and "has to start after" links and they don't show up at all for us.

Is there a way to set up a support call where we can go over specific issues? Thanks!!

This is not working for me either. I'm trialling this app for purchase at my company so it'd be nice to see if we can expect to see it fixed anytime soon

Is this expected to work with next-gen projects too?

Hello everyone,

I am glad to inform you that the feature enabling to link tasks to Epic in the NextGen projects is going to be deployed along with BigPicture 8 release, which is already in progress. Our plan is to upgrade all instances to the latest version within the next two weeks.

We appreciate your patience and sincerely hope that the new version will rise up to your expectations.

Best regards,

For next gen you could try manually adding a linkled issue to your epic and then using this link for your hirarchy .

E.g. I create a new linked issue type called parent Child and set the issues as children of the epic.

Tried all above mentioned options, epics keep showing up in a flat list. I am working in cloud with a next-gen project. Everything bone stock and added BigPicture to this, does not work at all. Would be nice to get an update on when default day one functionality will work in your product.

David I February 13, 2020

It work for me in classic, I've not tried in next gen. I know next gen have a different way of structuring epics and subtasks so maybe this is why it's not working.
